Govt to raise forbid on migration to Iraq for work today
The government is preparing to lift the ban on migration to Iraq for work on Wednesday after US assurance to retain the Nepali workers in Iraq.

Minister for Labour and Transport Management Mohamad Aftab Alam said, his ministry will lift the ban on migration to Iraq for work most likely today.

The foreign ministry has written to the labour ministry asking it to lift the ban after the US assurance.

US ambassador to Nepal Scott H DeLisi had assured not to repatriate Nepali workers from Iraq if Nepal lifts the ban at a discussion with foreign ministry officials on Tuesday.

Nepal had banned its citizens from going to Iraq for work after 12 Nepalis were brutally murdered by an Islamic radical group in August, 2004.

Even then, some 30,000 Nepalis have gone to Iraq for work through various illegal channels.

They were facing a risk of repatriation after the US Central Command directed all companies working for it to remove workers not in compliance with the local, international and US laws and the laws of the home country of the workers.
